Yes, we noticed the name. It’s a coincidence. The blend is good enough that we stock it anyway. This is one of the most popular biltong spices Freddy Hirsch makes. Coriander and black pepper sit on top, with pimento underneath. Pimento is allspice, and it’s not something you find in many biltong blends. It’s what gives this its warmth and its slightly sweet finish. Under all of it is a deep beef country flavour. It’s the taste people mean when they say biltong should taste like the veld. How to use it
  • 40 to 50g of spice per 1kg of meat
  • Mix or tumble the spice, meat and any other ingredients together
  • Leave it overnight to marinate
  • Mix or tumble again, then hang
  • Dry to 40 to 50% moisture loss
1kg covers roughly 20 to 25kg of meat. Goes well with a KK biltong cabinet and a Heritage Slicer. Freddy Hirsch has been milling and blending spice in Cape Town since 1956. This blend comes out of that same facility, which is why it tastes the way it does back home. Store the pack flat somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight. Reseal it once it’s open.
